Vietnamese disconnect tone string for Cisco Linksys SPA devices

I have recently acquired a Cisco SPA8800 device to do a VoIP installation.

I was having a lot of trouble getting it to recognise the disconnect tones for my landline. I recorded some, analysed them, and–with the help of these awesome instructions–created a disconnect string.

So, to help others in Vietnam and beyond, here is the disconnect string for Vietnam (specifically VNPT in the south of Vietnam):

430@-30,430@-30;1(.5/.5/1+2)

Textcast alternative

Some months ago I read the story of how Textcast was created … but (coincidentally) about a week earlier I’d created basically the same thing using Mac OSX’s Automator.

And months and months later I’m finally getting around to sharing that Automator script.

(I don’t intend any disrespect to the Textcast authors. I understand they’ve done a nice job on their application … but I don’t need many bells and whistles … and all the pieces were just sitting there in Automator ready to go …)

You’ll need a little Automator understanding to modify the paths and locations for your own use.

To use it, I copy the text I want to convert onto the clipboard and run the application.

Hugh saw my previous post about unsubscribing … and sent me a most beautiful cartoon … I bow to you, sir …

It is a beautiful cartoon … … Much is forgiven … Hugh, I’d like to say that I understand your point of view, but as a long-term participant in the world of co-operative development (culture, software, etc), I’ve seen too many behaviours pour out of Micro$oft that must be attributed to a rotten corporate culture … I’ll return to enjoying your beautiful art and your intelligent discourse when the Kool-Aid runs out …

(of course, I am tempted by the argument that I should never attribute to malice those behaviours of Micro$oft which can be ascribed to mere incompetence).

I know there are good people inside the organisation. I have worked with some exceptional escapees.

To be honest I think my problems are much deeper than merely Micro$oft … I am troubled by corporations, which are given the legal rights of a person, but whose behaviours are outright criminal, anti-social or anti-community. I hope this stuff is in the past for Micro$oft.

I do genuinely hope that a new Blue Monster emerges from this … but the signs have not been good.

Using Speed Scheduler with Azureus on MacOSX

It took me too long to work out where Speed Scheduler should be installed to use it with the MacOSX version of Azureus. Since I spent a while searching the net, here’s what I eventually worked out:

/Users/username/Library/ApplicationÂ Support: /Azureus/plugins/speedscheduler/SpeedScheduler_1.3.jar

(Of course, this should be one line!)

You’ll need to create the ’speedscheduler’ directory yourself … the Speed Scheduler plugin is distributed as a single JAR file.

Vietnamese language lessons

The Voice of Vietnam radio service provides 38 lessons for English speakers to learn Vietnamese. These used to be available for download in RealAudio format, but the website has recently been updated to a format that cannot be accessed on any of my systems … I had some of the files, but I could no longer find the downloadable versions online. I eventually discovered the files I was missing through some detective work in Google’s cache and the Wayback Machine. Also, RealAudio files won’t play on my iPod. So, here are the lessons in their original RealAudio files, here are the lessons as MP3 files (there is also an archive of all the lessons). Please don’t link to these files without informing me. This site can’t handle the bandwidth. Also, I don’t own the copyright in these files, that clearly belongs to VOV.
